Using Foxit Reader to read PDF documents gives you more benefits than using a web browser, but only if you’re willing to sacrifice a fairly large amount of free space. Among the benefits is a more comfortable interface for reading documents with four page modes, four view modes, and two skins.

If you enable the dark skin, combined with the Night Mode, the colors of the interface and document background will turn into dark ones that complement each other. And if the ribbon toolbar gets in the way of your reading experience, press Ctrl + H to hide it as well as other unnecessary interface elements.

Features and Highlights

The installation of Foxit Reader contains optional components which include shell extensions, a browser plugin, and a spell checker. Along with these is an option to disable Safe Reading Mode or leave it enabled. This mode can also be disabled or enabled from the main interface.

Safe Reading Mode is a security mechanism designed to protect your computer from malicious PDF files and is a part of Trust Manager, which is a security feature that can also block PDF files from uploading data to the internet and prevent another software without a valid digital signature from opening Foxit Reader.

Foxit Reader can open multiple files in separate tabs or windows, though the latter requires the multiple instances option to be enabled beforehand. It can also view several files at once in a side-by-side layout, horizontally or vertically.

When you read a PDF document in Foxit Reader, you can highlight any character, word, phrase, sentence, or paragraph. The highlight color is yellow by default, which you can change to another color either by pressing Shift + 0 up to Shift + 9 or by clicking the floating button that appears above the highlighted text.

Foxit Reader allows you to add stamps, text boxes, notes, images, links, comments, and bookmarks. In addition to standard stamps, there are also dynamic stamps that contains date information which changes according to the day when you add the stamps to the document.

When you edit a PDF document, you can save the changes manually or let Foxit Reader saves the changes automatically at a specified interval, which is every five minutes by default. The document can also be saved as a linearized PDF file which allows anyone to open and read it in a web browser without having to wait until the entire file is downloaded completely.

Please be mindful when installing Foxit Reader. It will install a 14-days trial of Foxit PDF Editor unless you choose to reject the offer. Also, if you deselect the ‘Help improve user experience’ option during the installation, make sure to open Preferences > General after the main interface opens and then check if the same option stays disabled.

Foxit Reader attempts to connect to the internet repeatedly during and after its installation.
